How can you save time and keep organized in Engineering Village?

on Thu, 02/11/2016 - 22:37

In the inaugural webinar of our new monthly webinar series, Sally Fell, Engineering Village Product Manager, provided an overview of the user-driven features and content updates made in Engineering Village over the past year. If you missed the live webinar, you can still watch the recorded version (click here).  It is only 30 minutes in length and is a great way to ensure you are aware of, and using, all the latest features.

A key takeaway from the webinar is the benefit of free registration. Throughout her presentation, Sally highlights features you have access to as a registered user. If you don’t have 30 minutes to watch the full webinar right now, begin at minute 14:00 and spend about 3 minutes watching the main discussion on personalization.

As a supplement to Sally’s presentation, follow the quick tips for registered users below to learn how to keep organized, customize your Engineering Village experience and save time.

Keep organized: create customized folders

You can create and manage up to 10 personal folders. This is a great way to keep your research organized in the way that works best for you. To create your folders, go to the ‘Settings’ menu in the main navigation bar and select ‘Folders.’ See the images below.

Once you have your folders created, you can select to ‘save to folder’ from your search results and choose which folder you want to save the selected items to.

Customize Engineering Village: set user preferences

When signed into Engineering Village, you have the option to control your own user preferences. To get started, open the ‘Settings’ menu and select ‘My preferences.’

From here you can:

  • Choose which refine results facets you want to appear at the top of your search refinement options (watch minute 14:45 to learn more and see image A below)
  • Create a default naming convention to be used each time you download a file (see image B below)
  • Select  the default databases you want to regularly search in (see image C below)
  • Choose the highlight color your search terms appear in (see image A below)

Save time:  Save searches and create alerts

Once you have refined a search and are happy with the material you are finding, be sure to save your search. This saves you time and spares you from the frustration of trying to remember how you found certain information in previous sessions. Additionally, go a step further and create an alert. This way, any newly available material is sent directly to you in a weekly email. To see recent enhancements made to the alerting feature, take 1 ½ minutes to watch Sally’s presentation beginning at minute 9:00.

Remember, registration is free and easy to do from any of the pages within the Engineering Village platform. Just look for the ‘Register’ button in the upper right corner of the platform.
